Elizabeth Rosas Ruiz z”l

Elizabeth Rosas Ruiz died on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the age of 75. She was born on May 11, 1947 to Maria and Maximo Ruiz in Dallas, TX. She was the youngest of eight children.

After graduating from Crozier Tech High School, she attended college and worked. She enlisted in the Air Force in 1973, serving her country for four years before returning to Dallas. She began a career at the United States Postal Service in 1977 and spent over four decades there before a work accident left her with a traumatic brain injury and forced her onto workers comp in 2020.

In 1987, she welcomed her only child, Anjelica. Elizabeth was a fiercely dedicated and protective single parent who made sure her daughter had the opportunities and experiences that she did not. In 2002, her daughter fell into a deep depression, requiring three hospitalizations in as many months. Elizabeth bore the heavy burden of providing support for her and fought for her every step of the way while still working full time and maintaining a calm façade. Her daughter thought she would not make it to high school graduation, but Elizabeth made sure she had the help she needed and supported her. She proudly watched Anjelica receive her high school diploma in 2005, followed by her Bachelors in 2008, and two Master’s degrees in 2010 and 2012. Her daughter is forever grateful that her mom never gave up on her and pushed her even when she didn’t believe in herself.

Elizabeth loved dogs and brought home several rescues over the past 20 years, most notably her beloved corgi, Bowser, who passed away in 2020. Elizabeth loved reading and devoured books, two of the many gifts she passed on to her daughter. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, cross-stitch, and flower arranging.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Eva Gonzales and Mary Flores, and brother Maximo Ruiz, Jr., as well as many of the dogs she saved, including Bowser and Jack.

She is survived by her daughter, Anjelica, and treasured dogs Maxine and Roxy, as well as her sisters Ruth Honza (Lawrence), Virginia Shields (Robert), and Rosa Hernandez, brother Elias Ruiz (Olivia), and many nieces and nephews, including Mercedes Garcia (Joe), who, along with the wonderful staff at Parkland Memorial Hospital and Aristo Care Homes, helped Anjelica care for her during the last eight months of her life.

A burial service will be held on Thursday, March 2nd at 10:00 am at Hillcrest Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service at Temple Emanu-El at 11:30 am, which will be livestreamed here. A shiva minyan will be held on Sunday, March 5th at 5 pm at Temple Emanu-El.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution in Elizabeth’s name to the SPCA of Texas and the Alex F. Weisberg Library at Temple Emanu-El.
