Six Months
Dear Eliza,
You are now six months old! You’re constantly on the move and sitting up on your own. You are now double your birth weight and over 26 inches long. It feels like I just gave birth to you, it’s hard to believe you’re halfway through your first year of life.
I took you with me to vote last Friday. Grandma always took me with her to the polls and stressed the importance of voting. When I turned 18, I registered right away and have voted in every election since. I looked down at you after I voted for Kamala Harris and felt such hope for your future. I wanted so badly for you to be witness to our first woman president, one with South Asian roots, just like you, but that was not the outcome. I wanted so much better for you and while that seems out of reach right now, I and so many others am not giving up. I won’t lie, I am afraid for what will come, but I will fight for you, no matter what.
I want you to remember that you have a family who loves you and a community that will always be here for you. I watched with pride as friends passed you around during the Sukkot celebration. You were so happy and Papa and I are thankful you have so many people who love you. We will do everything we can to make this world a better place for you. I love you so much.
Love,
Mama
