Day 159
Tonight I volunteered at a family preparation planning workshop, which is designed to help parents who are undocumented put together important legal forms in case they are detained. As I expected, all of the families that came are Hispanic.
This is one of those times when my two main identities, being Hispanic and a practicing Jew, collide. I couldn’t help but think about how lucky I was that my grandparents immigrated and made sure all of their children were U.S. citizens. It’s not a far leap to think that if things had happened a little bit differently, my family might have needed to come to this workshop. I have the luxury of acting as a notary and not coming in as someone needing help.
That’s where the Jewish part comes in. I recognize the privilege I have of being a citizen and with everything going on in the world today, I just need to help however I can.
