12 Months

Dear Eliza,

You are one! I can’t believe how much you have grown. You are fully walking, working on running, and climbing everything you can. You’re curious about everything and love going on walks outside. Every time you see a doggy, you get excited and watch it as long as you can. You have the most infectious giggles and are so joyful. I especially love watching you with your siblings, who adore you. 

I was worried when I first found out I was pregnant because I wasn’t sure if I had any motherly instincts, though if you ask your aunties, they’ll scoff and say they always knew I had it in me. But as soon as I held you in my arms, I knew that I would do whatever it took to be a good mom and I hope I have been one so far. I look at you each day and marvel that I helped make such an amazing little human. You have a distinct personality and are so determined.

Taking you through the Jewish holidays and rituals has been meaningful. Judaism has brought so much light into my life, as well as a chosen family and community, and I want to convey that to you. You already love going to tot Shabbats and hearing the music. As part of our bedtime ritual, I sing Oseh Shalom and when you start talking, it will also include saying the Shema. Raising you Jewish is important to Papa and me and we’re grateful we have such an amazing community. 

You went on your first plane ride with Papa to New York to watch me graduate with my Masters in Jewish education. I wish Grandma had been there too, but seeing you and Papa watching proudly as I entered the sanctuary during the processional reminded me of how full my life is and I think Grandma would be happy to see that. I want you to know that you are capable of doing anything and, like Grandma did for me, I will do whatever I can to help you achieve your dreams and goals. 

I love you so much, my sweet girl. This year hasn’t always been easy or smooth, but I wouldn’t change a thing. You, your papa, and your siblings are the best things to ever happen to me and I’m so grateful. You are so loved by all of us, your family, your aunties, and your community. We will always be here for you.
